What is the worth of dong in Vietnam?
How much can buy what, I haven't been there since I was small and most of my family hasn't been there in a while. I want to send my father and brother in law some money, but I don't know how much to send, because I know their money isn't worth as much as USD, I want to send enough so they can party, restore family grave sites, offering to temple and to buy gifts for a few relatives. Does anyone know how much money I should have sent over there? I know what the exchange rate is, but don't know the worth of the money, that's really what I'm asking. If anyone knows, it would be a great help. Serious answers only please, thank you.
Depends on where your father and bro-in-law live. Things are much cheaper in smaller cities. I was in Ho Chi Minh City, which should be the city with highest cost of living, last summer and I can give you an estimate of how much things are priced there :
- wash hair at roadside saloon = VND12k (VND6k in Ha Noi)
- a bowl of good pho/rice noodle = VND10k to VND20k
- seafood dinner for a family of 6 at good restaurant = VND600k
- monthly salary of an experienced manager = US$500
If not including the hotel bills and taxi fares, on average I spent less than US$5 a day for meals. Hope I've helped some.
